We Had Puppies

Well, Leia and Solo got together and Leia had a litter of pups. Leia had 10 healthy pups; 7 Girls, 3 Boys! Hmmm, not even close to a 50/50 split but Leia is healthy and is a great first time mom. Oh, she has taken to being a mom naturally, always pulling the little tikes in underneath her and letting them crawl all over her. 75% Great Pyrenees and 24% Maremma, 1% Sheppard, yes, big dogs. We are thinking the 3 boys will be very big with the girls perhaps taking on the stockier build like Mom. Let’s just wait and see.

Lisa and Ashley did an amazing job staying up each night with Leia as it was a long week. They continued to take shifts on the nursing of a little tyke, bless them as they have had very little sleep. They acquired a whelping pen that seemed to work perfectly for Leia and her newborn pups and once the pen is finished being used for the pups, amazingly enough we are able to use it out in the garden as a decorative fence. Ingenious!

We have 3 adult Great Pyrenees / Maremma’s and fully understand what they need and expect from their owners. Yes, these dogs do have expectations. This breed of dog is classified as a livestock guardian dog and it needs a decent sized space to roam and run. They are natural property protectors while they protect livestock.

Please note, these are traditionally farming dogs and they get along amazingly with livestock. We have pigs on the farm, obviously (Hamlet & Wilbur Farms), and all 3 of our adult dogs love the pigs and vice versa.

Our dogs all receive top notch K9 Academy Inukshuk Dog / Puppy Food which is excellent for very active farm or acreage dogs. Mom has had a steady diet of the puppy food during her pregnancy and throughout the whelping process.
