What Our Pigs Eat – KuneKune Pig Diet

Our pigs have a variety of different food sources which keeps them always excited and interested. During the warmer months, they can graze in our pasture and get a pretty good fill of grass, crabgrass, dandelions and more. This is supplemented with black sunflower seeds and a nutritional supplement of ground oats.

There are some pasture plants that are very good for pigs; some may say weeds. Dandelions, Crabgrass, Plantain, Thistles, Raspberry Leaves, Sanfoin, Rape, Winter Peas, Forage Oats, Turnips, Chicory.

Of course our pigs love their abundance of fruits and veggies. They simply love fruit and crab apples, blueberries, Saskatoon berries, and bananas top their list of favs. Our pigs also love tomatoes like most pigs as they are a nice soft treat. We do feed them potatoes but we boil them to soften them up a bit so it is easier for them to eat and digest. Cooked Beets are absolutely one of the top veggies they love and they pull them out of their bowl first!

Their diet is more veggie oriented with fruit being the treat inside their food bowls each day. However, they are extremely smart and start with their favs and work to their least fav. Pushing some veggies aside to get those berries or crabapples.

During the winter months we are feeding them a smaller amount of fruit and veggies, black sunflower seeds, ground oats, and alfalfa hay.

There are some things they don’t get because they are not good for them.

We Don’t Feed Our Pigs:
– meat, fish, or bones from meat and fish, or oils from meat or fish or any food that has come in contact with meat and fish oils
– apple seeds; these are poisonous to pigs so any regular sized apples with seeds are cored
– fruit tree leaves, tomato leaves
– broccoli roots, seeds
– green potatoes; these are simply potatoes that have sat out to long and have a green tinge to them
– avocado skin and pits

Our pigs have a very healthy diet and it will always remain that way. What they eat now they love and a happy pig is an awesome pig!
